Anyone else here use meditation as a tool for insight? Sometime I find that achieving at least a semblance of a calm mind state leads to more productive thought. I have been trying to use these moments to reflect on scriptures and to sift out what I believe the meaning may be. Its hit or miss, but at the very least it gives me some peaceful downtime to contemplate.

I like to think about things a lot, but rarely take time to simply sit and reflect. I suppose that is still a form of mediation. At this point in my life I'd rather just think about an issue and write/talk about it than sit and think or just pray. I recently heard someone who is interested in Hinduism talking about chanting, even if it's not out loud. I don't know if chanting has any spiritual use, but I've found myself using his chant to help me deal with stress and disassociate myself from something I'm doing that causes me a lot of anxiety. I suppose I'll use any tool that is helpful

I meditate, but not on a regular basis. I mentally chant "Love God, love my neighbor".

Huh, I have never tried a mantra or a chant but it couldn't hurt. Thanks for the insights guys. Some of the states of mind it seems come through in scriptures make me wonder if they aren't the result of deep meditation, of course I could be way off base.

I meditate every day. Just zazen, which is zen sitting meditation. It's pretty much all I do now in a 'spiritual' sense. It has lessened my desire to pray or read scripture for better or for worse. It removed that weight from my shoulders. It lead me to quiet my monkey mind and be ok with the idea that there may be nothing waiting for us after death. It teaches one to live in the present.
