The Book of Enoch: The Celestial Tablets
Chapter 2
It so happened that after the sons of men had multiplied in those days, daughters, elegant and beautiful, were born to them. And when the Watchers, the Sons of heaven, saw them, they became enamored by them, saying to each other, “Come, let us select for ourselves wives from the daughters of men, and let us have offspring by them.”
Then their chief, Semyaza, said to them, “I fear that all of you may be reluctant to agree to this deed and that I alone will suffer for such a grievous sin.” But they answered and said to him, “We all shall swear by an oath and bind ourselves by a mutual curse that we will not change our intention but execute our plan.” Then they all swore by an oath and bound themselves by a mutual curse.
Their whole number was two hundred that had descended upon the summit of Mount Hermon in the days of Jared. Therefore, they called the mountain Hermon, because they had sworn upon it and bound themselves by a mutual curse.
These are the names of their chiefs: Semyaza, who was their leader, Araklba, Rameel, Kokabel, Tamlel, Ramlel, Danel, Ezeqeel, Baraqiyal, Asael, Armarel, Batarel, Ananel, Zaqiel, Samsapeel, Satarel, Turel, Yomyael, and Sariel. Each of these ruled over ten angels—each out of the two hundred angels.
Then they each took one wife for themselves and began to go in unto them and to defile themselves by having sex with them. And the angels taught their wives sorcery, enchantments, and the dividing of roots, and how to be skillful with herbs.
And the women conceived and gave birth to giants, whose stature was each three hundred cubits. These giants devoured all of which the labor of men produced, until it became impossible to feed them. And then they turned against the men and started to devour them and began to sin against the birds, beasts, reptiles, and fishes and eat their flesh and drink their blood. It was then that the earth laid accusations against the lawless ones that had descended.
Furthermore, Azazel taught men to make swords, knives, shields, breastplates, the fabrication of mirrors, and the workmanship of bracelets and ornaments, the use of paint, the beautifying of the eyebrows, the use of stones of every valuable and select kind, and all sorts of dyes so that the world became altered. Impiety increased; fornication multiplied; and they transgressed and corrupted all their ways.
Semyaza taught all about casting spells and the dividing of roots,
Armaros taught about the release from spells,
Baraqiyal taught how to observe the stars,
Kokabel taught about the constellations,
Ezeqeel taught about the knowledge of clouds,
Araqiel taught about the earth’s surface,
Shamsiel taught about the signs of the sun, and
Sariel taught about the phases of the moon.
And as the people were perishing, they cried out, and their cries were heard up in heaven.
Then Michael, Uriel, Raphael, and Gabriel looked down from heaven and saw the amount of blood that was being shed on earth and all the anarchy that ensued, and they said to one another, “It is the cries that the earth has expressed of her children being destroyed, for their cries have even reached the gate of heaven. And now to you, O Holy One of heaven, the souls of men complain, saying, ‘Obtain justice for us with the Most High.’”
Then they said to their Lord, the King, “You are Lord of lords, God of gods, King of kings, and your throne of glory is forever and ever, even as your name is sanctified and glorified throughout all the ages. You have made all things. You possess power over all things, and all things are open and manifest before you. You behold all things, and nothing can be concealed from you. You have seen what Azazel has done, how he has taught unrighteousness to those who inhabit the earth and has disclosed to the world all of the secret mysteries which are done in the heaven. Semyaza also has taught sorcery to which you have given authority over those who are associated with him. They have gone together to the daughters of men, and have had sex with them, and have defiled themselves, and have revealed all kinds of sins to them. The women have given birth to giants, and the entire earth has been filled with blood and unrighteousness. And now, behold! The souls of those who are dead have cried out and appealed even to the Gate of Heaven. Their lamenting has ascended, and no one can escape from the unrighteousness that is committed on earth. You know all things before they exist, yet you have allowed these things to happen and have said nothing to us. What should we to do to them on account of these things?”
Then the Most High, the Great and Holy One, spoke and sent Uriel to the son of Lamech, saying, “Go to Noah and tell him, ‘In my name hide yourself,’ and explain to him the consummation which is about to take place, for all the earth shall perish, for a flood shall consume the entire earth and everything that is in it shall be destroyed. And instruct Noah on how he may escape and how his seed may remain on the earth.”
Again the Lord said to Raphael, “Bind Azazel hand and foot and, after creating an opening in the desert which is in Dudael, cast him in there. Hurl on top of him rough and jagged stones, covering him with darkness. Cover his face that he may not see the light, and there he shall remain forever. And on the Day of Judgment, let him be cast into the fire. Then heal the earth which the Nephilim have corrupted and proclaim life to it that I may restore it. All the sons of men shall not perish because of the hidden knowledge by which the Watchers have misled them and have taught their offspring, for all of the earth has been corrupted by the effects of the teaching of Azazel. Therefore, to him I shall ascribe all sin.”
To Gabriel also the Lord said, “Go to the bastards, to the reprobates, and to the children of fornication and destroy the offspring of the Watchers from among men. Cast them out that they may fight against one another, causing them to perish by mutual slaughter, for they shall not be allowed the length of days. No request that the Watchers ask of you shall be granted them on their behalf, for they hope for eternal life and that they may live, but each of them shall only live for five hundred years.”
To Michael the Lord said, “Go and announce his sin to Semyaza and to the others that are with him, who have had sex with women and have been defiled by all their impurity. And after all their sons have been slain and after they have seen the destruction of their loved ones, bind them fast for seventy generations underneath the earth, even until the Day of Judgment and of their consummation, for their judgment at its completion shall last forever.
“In those days, they shall be taken away into the abyss of fire, and in torment and confinement shall they be shut up forever. Then Semyaza, together with the others, shall burn and perish, for they shall be bound until the completion of many generations. Abolish all the spirits addicted to lust and the offspring of the Watchers, for they have tyrannized mankind. Let every oppressor perish from the face of the earth. Let every evil work be destroyed, and let the plant of righteousness and truth appear so that its fruit shall prove to be a blessing. For the works of righteousness and of truth shall forever be planted with delight.”
“And then shall all the righteous give thanks and shall live until they have begotten a thousand children, while the days of their youth and their old age shall be completed in peace. In those days, the entire earth shall be refined in righteousness, and it shall be planted with delightful trees and filled with unending blessings. Then the earth shall produce vines, and the vine which shall be planted in it shall yield the fruit of fullness, and every seed that shall be sown in it shall produce for one measure a thousand, and one measure of olives shall produce ten presses of oil. The earth shall be purified from all the oppression, injustice, sin, impiety, and all the unrighteousness that has been committed upon it, for it shall be abolished from upon the earth. Then shall all the children of men be righteous, and all the nations shall honor, praise, and worship me. The earth shall be cleansed from all corruption, sin, condemnation, and suffering. Neither will I again send a flood upon it throughout all generations forever. In those days, I will open the storehouse of blessings which are in heaven that I may cause them to descend upon the earth and upon all the works and labor of man. Peace and truth shall be a companion to the sons of men all the days of the world, throughout every generation.
During the time that Enoch was hidden, none of the sons of men had known where he was or what had happened to him, for he was solely engaged with the holy ones and the Watchers in his days. - Anagoge of a Scribe
