What is in a mustard seed? Jesus said that the kingdom of God is like a mustard seed. Why a mustard seed as opposed to some other small unit? It seems that the mustard seed is also used to describe all the knowledge of the world compared to the knowledge of God. The kingdom of God is not something we can fully comprehend. We have difficulty understanding Christ and he was supposed to be God in the flesh but yet we want to try to understand the Kingdom of God? It is also a reminder that greatness comes from humble origins. If we interpret it to be all the knowledge of the world, it can grow into something even greater over time. We bury what we believe to know and let it grow. Like the mustard seed, truth also grows. It does not die when buried, but patiently waits until it is its time to sprout and blossom. It should also be noted that the mustard plant was regarded as weed, that once it was planted, it could not easily be gotten rid of. So too is truth. Once truth has taken root, it is very difficult to weed it out. The mustard seed has many meanings to it: the total sum of all the knowledge of the world in comparison to God; it grows into a great plant, and it is also regarded as weed that is difficult to uproot. All of these meanings interconnect to represent the fullness of God and truth. By burying the knowledge of the world we let what is true come to fruit and once the truth has been sown, it is difficult to remove. To do great things though requires faith, for without faith, nothing can be accomplished.
