Jesus said, "Whoever does not hate his father and his mother cannot become a disciple to me. And whoever does not hate his brothers and sisters and take up his cross in my way will not be worthy of me."
Doesn't Christ give commandments to love?

It's translated from Coptic. Coptic is a language of extremes.

That's interesting I'd always been told it was hate in comparison to how much you should love Christ.

I see it as a passage about truth vs tradition. If you love truth you'll reject tradition if it goes against truth. You won't seek to part of communities that value tradition over truth. But that's my layman take on it.

I saw that passage in the same way. Less of a literal hate and more of a willingness to walk a hard road in search of truth.
