Does what you believe make you a better person?

I think it's a combination of both belief and actions. If your beliefs motivate you do good things then your beliefs do make you a better person. If your beliefs don't lead you do good things then what good are your beliefs? Even if you belief in the "right" (relatively speaking) things, if they are not reflected by your actions, then they aren't making you a good person.

Most people would argue their beliefs make them a better person. I'm not so sure.

"I just say I'd like to think so" b/c I realize it's hard to be impartial about your own actions. The bad thing about your mental defense mechanisms is that they can prevent a person from recognizing when they are being horrible. I am sure I don't always recognize when I'm being a hypocrite.
I feel like I'm moving in the right direction though. Lately I've been pretty inspired by Philip K. Dick's ideas about replacing illusions with things that are real. It's been helping me with my diet and getting healthier etc.

I have found that beliefs are not much more then electrons bouncing around our brains. What we practice I think is more important then what we believe. And we should practice, not because it makes us a 'better person', but just to practice. Gaining more wisdom, peace and compassion is just a side effect of practice.

I think that what I believe can aid me in being a better person. I think of my beliefs as more a source of guide and potential.
