“50. Jesus said, "If they say to you, 'Where have you come from?' say to them, 'We have come from the light, from the place where the light came into being by itself, established [itself], and appeared in their image.' If they say to you, 'Is it you?' say, 'We are its children, and we are the chosen of the living Father.' If they ask you, 'What is the evidence of your Father in you?' say to them, 'It is motion and rest.'"” - Gospel of Thomas 50
13 For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. 14 For the whole Law is fulfilled in one word, in the statement, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 15 But if you bite and devour one another, take care that you are not consumed by one another. - Galatians 5:13-15
“Do not let the kingdom of heaven become a desert within you. Do not be proud because of the light that enlightens. Rather, act toward yourselves as I myself have toward you. I have put myself under a curse for you to save you.” - Apocryphon of James
For many, the law, whether it be religious or secular, is a god. One assumes that being lawful will make one righteous, godly. How many times do we hear as an excuse, “I'm just following orders”, or “I'm just doing my job”? Being children of the light, we recognize that not all laws are righteous, that being lawful and doing what you are told does not make you a good person. This is where Christ enters into our world to show us this fact. He and his disciples work on the Sabbath, he flips over tables, but is this all there is to him? Is he just a rebel without a cause? His cause was a specific cause, he was the perfect image of God, he came to show us what God were like if he were man. He came to show us that there was another way to be righteous and godly. That there was another Law that laws derive from and that is the Law of Love.
All of those that come from the Light are under the Law of Love. By being the Son, he showed us that we too are children of the Light and also under the Law of Love. Since we are children, we are like the Son in that we can also show a better way to others. We can put the Law of Love in action in our lives and show how it changes us. So what does it mean to put the Law of Love in action? It is motion and rest. It is knowing when to act in love and when to not act in love. This is recognizing what is Caesar's and what is God's. Caesar demands that we perpetually consume and produce. God wants us to give and to repair. Caesar demands that we see others as less than ourselves. God wants us to see each other as brothers and sisters. Caesar decrees that there are those unworthy of love. God knows that all are worthy of love and that compassion heals those that want it. Being children of the light is to show that love in how we live our lives.
Phillip K. Dick wrote, “To fight the Empire is to be infected by its derangement. This is a paradox; whoever defeats a segment of the Empire becomes the Empire; it proliferates like a virus, imposing its form on its enemies. Thereby it becomes its enemies” This same warning was also given to us by Paul and in Secret James. We are free, but we are not to let our freedom become an opportunity to put others in bondage. It's easy to confuse Caesar and God. Both are lawgivers but only one law will last. While we are children of the Light we are also children of the Demiurge, Caesar. We are hardwired to aim to become Caesars in our world, to be self-serving. To make our brothers and sisters into Others that are unworthy of our love. That same light can corrupt us if not tempered by love. Christ and the Demiurge came from the same source. One is wisdom with love, the other is wisdom without love. To forget love is to let the Light transform ourselves into the Demiurge, the very Caesar we wished to dethrone in our lives.
Remember as we go about our lives that we are children of the Father-Mother. We are brothers and sisters of Christ and have the same light within us, even if we don't recognize it yet. For those of us that do recognize the light within us, remember that the same light is with others and don't let the light burn you up. Keep love in your life and that remember that the light does not make you Caesar. Anyone can become Caesar, but there has only been one Christ. Show the Caesar that you know and others will only see Caesar. Show the Christ that you know and others will see the God that you know. Amen.
