"Jesus told him, "If you want to be perfect, go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."~ Matt 19:21
" The second of the rich men (it saith) said unto him: Master, what good thing can I do and live? He said unto him: O man, fulfil (do) the law and the prophets.
He answered him: I have kept them. He said unto him: Go, sell al that thou ownest, and distribute it unto the poor, and come, follow me. But the rich man began to scratch his head, and it pleased him not. And the Lord said unto him: How sayest though: I have kept the law and the prophets? For it is written in the law: Though shalt love thy neighbor as thyself, and lo, many of thy brethren, sons of Abraham, are clad in filth, dying for hunger, and thine house is full of many good things, and nought at all goeth out of it unto them. "~Gospel of the Hebrews
"96. Jesus [said], "The Father's kingdom is like a woman. She took a little leaven, [hid] it in dough, and made it into large loaves of bread. Anyone here with two ears had better listen!" ~Thomas
Our "Small Blue Marble" is actually a huge scary place to live. The first two quotes from Jesus seemingly place a huge burden on our backs. Jesus, particuarly in the quote from GTH, is stating the ideal, in a straight forward no nonsense manner; He counters the rich man whom is seemingly trying to "lawyer" his way into heaven by pointing out the obvious----- the man is living far above comfort level while the city is full of those dreaming of obtaining even that.
What can we do? There are so many many people who are lost and desolate, and so very few of us. Selling "all that we have" will no longer help anyone; and I know that a lot of us here would struggle to come up with a single nights hotel rent.
We are not rich, but we want the opportunity to beome perfect also!
The quote from Thomas gives us an answer. We can be a "little leaven", (which in jewish lore was right dowm there with skubala---but that is a different sermon)
We can each pick one person, and dedicate ourselves (not in a cReEpY fashion) to making that person's life a little easier. Maybe a student needs a little money for books, or some tutoring. Maybe an old retired woman needs someone she can count on to go grocery shopping with. I could go on, but you get the point.
Our Father in Heaven with us, Thank you for the opportunities to live in your perfection. Amen.
