This "map" seems to reside on sites that are atheist driven. It would appear someone came up with the idea by using opposing views in an attempt to map "where they are" in a religious arena of spiritual believers. It reminds me of the Trinity explanation map that attempt to trap ones mental views by thinking it's simple to understand if the eye's see it rather than the mind. Why someone made this up using Gnostic surprises me and just tells me they are ignorant of what gnosis is. They might as well said Gnostic is "knowledge" and anything less is shared with "ignorance" as they moved towards the lower level, right or left. Then they could truly see where they were on the map. The bottom comment on this map sums up ignorance.

Yeah, I've seen that chart around in various places. It was probably made by someone who, ironically, thought they knew something and wanted to help clarify something they themselves were still a bit foggy on. The thought process probably went something like: "gosh, atheist and agnostic are big words and mean similar things....but I know that the "a" means "not"...or something. I can use that little bit of knowledge and make a chart, like I learned in grade school, to help people identify how to label themselves when religious talk comes up." It's a pretty silly chart. In reality (or at least our culturally agreed upon take on it here in the kenoma ) a "gnostic atheist" would just call themselves an atheist.....and a "agnostic atheist" would just call themselves an agnostic. There are already two words for two different concepts....just define those and be done with it! Also, I highly doubt many fundamentalist types like in the picture would accept the label "gnostic theist". Basically the word "gnostic" in the chart is used in the place of "close minded". Maybe this chart's creator should have made "100% certain" the word "gnostic" didn't have its own meaning before assigning it one......but he/she wouldn't be the first......I'm looking at you Eric Voegelin!!!
